Andy Murray and Amelie Mauresmo

They confirmed yesterday that they’ve entered into a coaching relationship for the grass court season initially, with the possibility of extending their association if things go well. They were both matter-of-fact and keen to discuss how they will work together; everyone else wanted to discuss Mauresmo’s gender. Lots of people saying that she can’t coach a man because she hasn’t played men’s tennis and that she doesn’t have anything she could offer. Funny how men who coach women players aren’t dismissed because they’ve never played women’s tennis at a high level. It’s as though men’s experiences encompass and contain women’s, whereas women’s experiences relate to women only.

I hope that all the hoopla doesn’t interfere with their work together.
