We’re in a bit of an arms race with the dog when it comes to keeping him inside the fence. He gets out; we find the gap and block it; he gets out. Repeat as necessary.
Today, he heard Petra and me having a tea party on the deck and wanted to join us. He whined and whimpered, but we ignored him. And so, he just let himself out and came round the side of the house to meet us.
In some ways it’s reassuring to know what he’s up to. The gap he squeezed through today has been there for ages, which means that he’s been only nominally contained for some time. But he’s not made much use of his freedom. A couple of visits to the neighbours, and some escapes to make sure we’re not doing things without him, and that’s his lot.
I don’t think he’s going to grow up to be a big wanderer. But we’re still going to do our best to keep him secure.
