130kmh winds forecast for Wellington

If this kind of wind blew in Vancouver, Stanley Park would be leveled. Here, the trees are so accustomed that the damage will probably be limited to a branch here and there.

I’m not keen on it though – the gusts are strong enough that it feels like the car could just sail away. And you need to keep a tight grip on your small children, or they’ll blow off down the street.

So that’s a breezy day in Wellington? Here it’s beyond violent storm and qualifies for hurricane force status!

Wellington takes wind to a whole other level! It was strong enough downtown this morning to knock people off their feet, landing even quite large planes was impossible for a while, and the small cross-harbour ferries were cancelled. The news tells me that the strongest gust recorded today in Wellington was 145kmh. Crazy stuff!
