Neither Here Nor There

I’ve been trying to finish up another set of writing exercises this weekend and have found myself mulling over odd things like getting the characters from one part of the house to the other. Just how much detail do you need to provide? How much setting is enough, and how much is too much?

I notice that I’m either providing too much discursive detail, or just writing conversations and leaving settings and descriptions out entirely. Who’d have thought that getting from room to room could be such a tricky business.

I’ll be studying the next novel I read with an eye to finding out how the characters move around.
