US debt crisis: Republicans abandon vote as deadline looms

US debt crisis: Republicans abandon vote as deadline looms | World news | guardian.co.uk.

What is up with the Republican Party?  They’re not even pretending to care about good governance any more; they’re in thrall to the fools, ideologues and whackjobs.

What’s up with the Democratic Party?  They persist in trying to negotiate and compromise with the crazies and in so doing betray their principles and their supporters.

And what’s up with the US media? It insists on portraying the parties as equivalent, sticking to a “he said/she said” formula even when one of the parties is flat out lying or just plain old loony.

It’s hard to watch.

From across the border it definitely looks crazy. And worrisome. But democracy is messy. Here everything seems to be run from the PMO without any serious dissent or tough questions.

Yes, a low-key autocratic rule like Stephen Harper’s is disconcerting for sure. We have something similar here and with a centre-right prime minister as well. It’s one of the features/bugs of having a majority government. Even so, I think I prefer the parliamentary system, with all its flaws, to the dysfunctional politics in the US. They seem to have taken the crazy to a whole new level..
