Queensland

Brisbane will go to sleep tonight and wake up to scenes that many of them have never seen anything like in their lives.

So says Queensland’s premier, Anna Bligh – getting to the heart of the scale of the disaster in Queensland.

The flooding in Brisbane has peaked. But low lying sections of the city, and the entire riverside area, have been inundated. I know about Brisbane – it’s where New Zealanders go to get warm. I’ve been there many times, my sister lived there for a number of years, family friends live on the Gold Coast, my brother lives in Mackay ( a few hours north of Brisbane). It’s so strange to see it closed and forlorn, at the mercy of the river at its heart.

Here are a few photos of the water from the BBC.
