I remain decidedly ambivalent about having to live in suburban Wellington, or Wellington at all really, but there’s no denying that it’s a beautiful place on a nice day.

We chose a couple of touristy things to do on Saturday and the sun obligingly emerged just as we got into town. We rode the cable car, the last remnant of what used to be an extensive tram system pulling people up Wellington’s brutal hills, and popped out at the top of the botanic gardens. The views of the harbour and central Wellington are stunning and the gardens themselves are lovely. They drop off down the hill precipitously, so we contented ourselves with checking out the top sections.
