It's all looks so green and sunny and summery. We had snow again last night. Our power was out for 5 hours yesterday morning due to another wind storm. The local mall still has no power and is closed. Today it's below zero and it looks like it might snow again this afternoon. I'm dreaming of a winter holiday in a tropical location.

Wow, more wild weather. You've had a whole winter's worth of it already. It seems like my visit coincided with the only mild week you've had for ages – no snow, no windstorms, no floods, no power outages, and no airport closures – which was great planning on my part. It's lovely here right now with less rain but warm temperatures still – just to rub it in. Doesn't feel much like Christmas though.

And, I forgot to mention, there are so many trees blown down in Stanley Park they've closed it and don't expect to reopen it for several days. The seawall is closed too. The causeway and the Lion's Gate Bridge were also closed until they managed to clear the debris off the causeway yesterday.

  4. Janette says:

The causeway was shut on Monday afternoon as well because of trees. The park will be bare if the winds keep up. And Vancouver's usually such an unwindy place. How are your trees holding up?

  5. Roewan says:

Yes, the TV news showed helicopter-taken footage of the blow-down in the park and it looked really bad. The eastern suburbs where I live got hit pretty hard too but as far as I have seen the large mature trees in our immediate neighbourhood all survived. Lots of branches and twigs and litter everywhere. I suspect people are going to be much more willing to let BC Hydro do more cutting and pruning that they have in the past.

Do you know where I could find pictures? I'd like to see what it looks like.

  7. Roewan says:

I'm looking… There are pictures in here but you have to hunt through the news program videos for the 16th and 17th. I found a fairly substantial story with lots of pictures about 9 minutes into the news video "Dec 17/06".
I’ve been trying to figure out how to grab the videos in case they get moved or removed but my techno-geek skills aren’t up to the task right now.

I hope these links still work by the time you look at them. But maybe you’ve found them all yourself already anyway.

CTV News from Dec 16 – see video clips “Janet Dirks reports…” and “Correspondents on the power outage” on this page.

    CBC story.

And see the “photo gallery” link on this page.

This story has a picture of a tree on a footbridge in Stanley Park.

  8. Janette says:

Thanks for the links – I'd forgotten about global and Canada.com. Stanley Park looks a real mess and I'm sorry to see the footbridge damaged – we walked across it often.
